Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan, b. 29 january 1970 into TO8 Day 58 is an 8:2. Resolving to 2:4, intensifying his self and his family interests over those of the group in which he finds himself. The overt or external qualities of 2, like concern with health and the measuring of social life through relationships, are intensified by his resolution,  Those of this type are great calculators and like to pin down numbers and quantities and can similarly measure up the personal debts and obligations that people around him owe or receive. He is a manager and adjuster of others to ensure that his own personal space and intellectual leanings remain unchallenged.  He is a static person in the sense that he is not affected by the need to fit into anyone else's ways of doing things and getting him to move in any one direction will not be easy.

What's truly interesting is that he has been picked by Mitt Romney, who is a 1:1.  In almost every way, the two would naturally not get along. Both Romney's deep seated trends and everyday decision-making antagonises Ryan's everyday Minor self while Ryan's deep-seated trends of his Major antagonises Romney's Major and Minor. Even although they have a superficial accord in that Romney, as a double 1, embodies something of the 8 in his everyday personality.

You can expect not just policy differences to emerge between them but stylistic and energetic ones as well. Romney will have trouble channelling Ryan, who will develop an inner circle of planners,  and Ryan, in turn, will be surprised by Romney's attachment to fashionable advice. We can expect gaffs and slips to occur between them daily.

Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum's d.o.b. is May 10, 1958. This makes him a Major 2 Minor 4.  This is quite unusual for a politician, no Landscape at all. He is in his Resolutions of 4:6, strengthening his 4 and his antagonism to the established hierarchies and community dynamics. He is a thinker who can think outside the box, an individualist who may enjoy undercutting formalities, an enjoyer of the incongruous with a poet's ability to reconcile incompatibilities, but one who will not tend to yield to prevailing conditions or adapt to decisions made by others. In spite of personal doubts, he prefers to lead from the front.

He is likely to have a high sex drive but also great romantic loyalty.  He will be loyal to his group and to his ideals but he is always at risk of saying and doing things that we would want to revise later. He loves the applause but will act for the greater good at the most dramatic moments. It is actually doubtful that his Catholicism will go all the way, and if push comes to shove he will support humanity against the machinations of any 'Messiah'. He loves the surreal conjunctions of events - it's likely to be what he loves most about his belief system - but he may prefer to bolster his personal doubts with intolerance and criticism. He cannot help but feel that individuals probably are more at fault for their own situation than society currently allows. His conservatism will deepen until a crisis point comes and it all ends somewhat self-destructively.

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich, born June 17, 1943, is a Major 3 Minor 2, and now in his Resolutions of 5:4.  According to his Essential year (the personal development cycle of TO8 Days), he moved into his resolutions around 1990, which is an interesting date for students of the TO8. That was the time Mr Gingrich began to think of an extra-marital affair with the woman who became his third wife, later demanding an open marriage from his second wife without success. His Resolutions are 5:4 where his internal conflict changes from one causing erratic category mistakes in his personal expression to one causing erotic tensions in his community duties. In these Resolutions, he is no doubt concerned with his standing in society even as he qualifies his acceptance of it with wild abstractions and intellectual complexities. He has good interesting ideas and is likely to be right about almost all his prognostications, although his inability to ignore what other decision-makers think will hamper his ability to form policy out of those ideas and make them happen. He is, in fact, too easily seduced by ideas for him to work simply and cleanly on policy. He will need 'yes-people' around him if he wants to get anything done at all, but these will have to suffer his doubts, imprecisions and revisions expressed at random and which interfere with his attractiveness as a leader.

Mitt Romney

Willard Mitt Romney, born March 12, 1947 (09:51), in the US, is a Major 1 Minor  1.  Those of the double 1, seemingly the quintessential social pioneers, express more of the Antagony of 8 than might be good for them at the beginning. Sensitive to criticism, protective of his interests, Romney will have been a quieter calculator than expected. Wanting to do the right thing and certainly in the right order, his deeper concerns for lost individuals gets swamped by his progress in the social reality of the day. He is more interested in the socially adventurous ideas than you might think but always the trend towards the decision-making elite will win out. He is in his Resolutions of 5:5 now, which will mean he can no longer escape from controlling interests.  He is the partner to the established hierarchies while the faint echo of independence will pop out from time to time in eccentricities that change nothing except his image. He will be very much the reprise of George Bush, an artificial conscience tempered by the community of money, though with stronger feelings for self-preservation and a more assiduous follower of the plan.

Yet another Landscape politician to replace the semi-Landscape politician.  The see-saw between hope and creativity and pragmatism in the American elections.

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens, b. February 7 1812 at 19:50 apparently in the evening.  On that day the cusp between TO8 Days 59 and 60 occurs a little after midday, so his evening birth puts him into TO8 Day 60 giving him a Major 8 and a Minor 4. 8 - 4 is the axis of mind on the move: from the burgeoning of clear isolated ideas to the complex interrelations underlying phenomenon. Loving heart, disdainful soul, Dickens was determined to keep his thoughts pure, while at the same time expressing them in their fullest descriptions.  He antagonised the Landscape on all fronts, warm on the surface, cool underneath, rigorous but inventive, enjoying the discomfort that his work brings, over enveloping the target with his observations that he still hits directly and cleanly. What he would give to have every criticism upheld while such a need is swept away time and again by a soul that fears a loss of self.  He loves the audience warmth while he is in full flight but condemns them afterwards for not being what he wants them to be. He resolved to 2:6, the axis of resources, gathering everything and everyone to the cause of putting his views into common usage and taking the others out. Ally to all that begins, or is born, scourge of the habits of social position, happy with riches, generous as long as there is no duty to it. Unified within himself, but a mystery to outsiders.

Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking, b. January 8 1942, Northern hemisphere out of the tropics, is a Major 7 and a Minor 6,  He has the backwards acting conflict where his Major 7 is antagonised by his everyday Minor 6. This could make him a pretty awkward customer. His humour is the caricaturing type and can use it to pin point precisely the weaknesses in those around him, especially when he feels they are denying him key things or facts or even moments. Following heroes and marking their trails with his own labels is his main intellectual tendency, not quite being able to take his thoughts too far from the most travelled route. Socially he tends to stay apart, though within sight of the group.  When he mixes, it's only at the highest level. The title of his book A Brief History of Time expresses precisely where his intellectual efforts lead, and the concept of infinity and what emerges from it mathematically probably attracts him the most. He is an egotist that plays the long game on humanity's behalf, caring little for social standing, and, at 70, well into his Resolutions of 1:8. is now a quieter, socially shyer person but one who has clasped onto his core character and preserves it with great determination.
